Victorian Poverty in Keighley.

If you look at this picture of Victorian Poverty you can’t help but think how great it would be if you could talk to the people. The hard life these people must have endured can only be wondered at. It was taken around 1850 and the more observant of you may notice that most of the adults are women. That is because many of the men of the time abandoned their families for a variety of reasons. One of the fathers “refused to support his wife and children,” surviving Victorian poor law records tell us. The parish supported them instead, to the princely tune of five shillings. Another woman called Ann fared rather better when she and her husband “failed to agree to live together”: she got £2.14s. And one more thing…
