Clouds drift gently above Festive Road but things aren’t so peaceful down on the ground. The children are playing noisily with balloons – blowing them up and letting go. I looked at the children and up again at the balloons floating away towards the clouds – how lovely it would be to float so freely in the sky, I thought. It made me think of the costume shop.
Festive Road is unusually busy today. The main road is being repaired and all the morning traffic crawls and honks its way past my door. So I decide to go to the costume shop, in search of an adventure and some peace and quiet. Once in the shop, I find a caveman’s costume and decide there can’t be much traffic in those days. So I head off to a land far away from the rush hour traffic of Festive Road… or so I thought.
One morning I awoke in Festive Road and took a look around my room. I felt rather shut in by the four walls that day. Perhaps I should go for a walk. My feet took me along the street, down the side-streets and into the little lanes. There I found the costume shop and decided to look inside. Inside I saw a costume covered in stripes with 123456789 stitched on it. Just as I was wondering what to make of it, the shopkeeper invited me to try it on.
It is Saturday morning in Festive Road. Coal is being delivered in great sacks and children are playing with wooden swords. The postman knocks on my door at number 52, my house, and hands me an invitation to a party – not just an ordinary party though but a fancy dress party. That could be fun, I think to myself. I must go and find myself a costume. So I set off for the shops but everywhere I go I can only find day-to-day clothes. I am walking back home just about to give up when I turn into a small lane and see a shop with strange costumes in the window.
