There is nothing we love more here at Jammy Toast than listening to some of our favourite tunes. From time to time we will post a music video from an artist or genre that we think will be enjoyable to you; our friends. We often feature music that you may not have come across before, or music that maybe you just missed the first time around. Try and listen with an open mind, you never know, you may find something you can add to your iPod. If you have any music videos you would like us to feature then drop us a line – we are always happy to listen to requests but we cannot promise to feature everyone’s favourite

“If I Should Fall Behind” was originally released on Bruce Springsteen’s 1992 album Lucky Town. The song wasn’t the best track on the album, my own favourites were Better Days and My Beautiful Reward, but it has since become a favourite performed live with each member of the band singing a verse each. It has become even more poignant since the 2011 death of saxophone player Clarence ‘The Big Man’ Clemons who was probably Bruce’s best friend amongst the band members.

The story of how the two musicians first met has passed into mythology and there are many different versions. However, According Clarence the truth is that a friend of his encouraged him to go and check Bruce out…

One night we were playing in Asbury Park. I’d heard The Bruce Springsteen Band was nearby at a club called The Student Prince and on a break between sets I walked over there. On-stage, Bruce used to tell different versions of this story but I’m a Baptist, remember, so this is the truth. A rainy, windy night it was, and when I opened the door the whole thing flew off its hinges and blew away down the street. The band were on-stage, but staring at me framed in the doorway. And maybe that did make Bruce a little nervous because I just said, “I want to play with your band,” and he said, “Sure, you do anything you want.” The first song we did was an early version of “Spirit in the Night”. Bruce and I looked at each other and didn’t say anything, we just knew. We knew we were the missing links in each other’s lives. He was what I’d been searching for. In one way he was just a scrawny little kid. But he was a visionary. He wanted to follow his dream. So from then on I was part of history.

Because of the subject of the song – waiting for friends who have fallen behind – since his death it has become a concert tribute to Clarence…

We said we’d walk together baby come what may
That come the twilight should we lose our way
If as we’re walking a hand should slip free
I’ll wait for you and should I fall behind, wait for me

We swore we’d travel darlin’ side by side
We’d help each other stay in stride
But each lover’s steps fall so differently
But I’ll wait for you and if I should fall behind, wait for me

Now everyone dreams of a love lasting and true
But you and I know what this world can do
So let’s make our steps clear that the other may see
And I’ll wait for you, If I should fall behind wait for me

Now there’s a beautiful river in the valley ahead
There ‘neath the oak’s bough soon we will be wed
Should we lose each other in the shadow of the evening trees
I’ll wait for you and should I fall behind, wait for me

Darlin’ I’ll wait for you, should I fall behind, wait for me

A fitting tribute indeed.

RIP Big Man…

  1. This song reminds me of an eventful day when Chimpton, Ananasty, K8Monster and I went on the Wirral Walk. At the time Chimpton spent every day in the gym and was even fitter than a butcher’s dog. K8Monster & I met at Fat Club (Slimming World) so you can guess what shape we were in. Off we went on the fifteen mile walk with Chimpton full of vim and vigour and K8Monster & I struggling to keep up.

But, just like in the lyrics of this song…

:music-1: We said we’d walk together baby come what may

I’ll wait for you and should I fall behind, wait for me :music-2:

CHIMPTON FUCKED OFF INTO THE DISTANCE!!!!

    1. What you missed out of the story was that I was PUSHING Ananasty in her wheelchair and she was not the lightest of children and I still waited nearly 55mins at the end for you to appear :roflao:

The following year I did it on my own pushing the sis too!

  2. I miss Clarence. He made some great music. He didn’t just play with Bruce he recorded with Gary U.S. Bonds, Lady Gaga, Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band,
Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Ronnie Spector, Scarlet Rivera, Janis Ian, Joan Armatrading, Greg Lake, Little Steven, Ian Hunter, Aretha Franklin, Gloria Estefan, The Four Tops, Todd Rundgren, Joe Cocker, Nils Lofgren, Alvin Lee, Roy Orbison and Luther Vandross.

I think it would have been quicker to list the people he DIDN’T play with!!

  3. Used to really admire this guy and some of the songs he wrote and then he had to spoil it all by getting all political and supporting big fat lazy liberals. I don’t really listen to him anymore but this reminds me of some of the great stuff he’s written.

  4. Every part of me is sweating at the moment. ….yes…even those parts ., but I did go to Boots to buy a deodorant this morning and the very helpful lady there asked if I wanted the ball type and I said “no thank you , it’s just for under my arms”.
