John Miles wrote Music in Leeds when he had some time to kill and his song writing partner at the time Bob Marshall wasn’t around. He claims it only took him half an hour to write. Although he originally thought it would be the basis of other songs, he later decided that it stood up well enough on its own. Alan Parsons produced the song as well as the rest of the album; Rebel. In an interview at the time, Alan Parsons said: “Music is a milestone in the history of popular music, and John Miles is one of my favourite singers, I am honoured that I have been able to put my mark onto his great music, yet you shouldn’t put all of the credits in my direction alone.”
