Longer Tweets

At first we didn’t get Twitter. I think we kind of missed the boat a little there because when we did finally get it, we loved it. However, one of the things we have not liked about Twitter is the 140 character limit. Many times we have tweeted something and it is too long so we then have to edit it. We have to delete things and shorten what we have to say. It can become very difficult cramming your thoughts into a tweet but still getting your message across with the character limit – it’s a real ache. Now the answer could be at hand as Twitter is currently trialling a larger 280 character limit.

Are we about to boldly go where no-one has gone before?

Most episodes of Star Trek begin with members of the Enterprise beaming down to the surface of a planet and having that week’s adventure. Then the programme ends when the crew beams back to the Enterprise and travels off into space at the speed of light ready for next week’s exploits. A great way of travelling this beaming up and down – it sure beats getting the bus. However, Chinese scientists say they have now “teleported” a photon particle from the ground to a satellite orbiting nearly a thousand miles away. So the big question is: is a world which was previously confined to science fiction now becoming reality?

Windows Phone Is Dead

You probably didn’t notice it this past week but support for Windows Phone 8.1 finished – and I wouldn’t bet too much that Windows 10 Mobile will soon go the same way. This is a sad end to what I thought was a great phone platform which worked for me. Take a photo out on the road, come home and there it is on your desktop computer – thanks to the Microsoft Cloud. Have an MP3 file on your phone and want to use it as a ringtone then do it, there is no need to pay for a different version of the same file like with other phone providers.

The World Is Flat

Yesterday, we reported that Elvis visits Jammy Toast every so often and enjoys reading our posts more or less on a daily basis. Although some people treated this revelation with a touch of scepticism, others were happy to go along with our shock admission. However, “Just Me” – we know you’re real name! – stated that she believes everything we say, with a hardly veiled hint of sarcasm, and that the earth is flat. We had to laugh at her comment because what other shape could it possibly be?

Here at Jammy Toast we love the internet. There is nothing more the bears love that goofing around websites looking for entertainment or some of our more serious bears doing research. However, that enjoyment just might become tainted soon as the evils of net neutrality raises its ugly head again. This week some of the internet’s most popular websites will participate in a day of action on Wednesday to oppose changes to US rules which govern net neutrality. Sites such as Netflix and Amazon are joining with civil liberty groups in a co-ordinated protest, and activists are already sharing viral content on Twitter, Reddit and Facebook in preparation.

As many of you will be aware, my daughter – The Chimpton – pops onto Jammy Toast every now and again and leaves little acidic comments on posts. Some of you who have been following Jammy Toast for a very long time may remember that we used to work together for a rather poor training company in the dim and distant past. I think it speaks volumes of just how bad the company was if I tell you that during the three years I worked for the company, their office in Birkenhead had nine different managers. I don’t want to name any names but the chairwoman of the company was a very dear friend of former Conservative leader; David Cameron. Enough said.

Microsoft In Trouble Again

Microsoft are always in trouble for what they include in Windows and sometimes what they exclude from Windows. You could easily be forgiven for thinking that the software giant can’t win – if they do something then they are in trouble but if they then undo it they are still in trouble. This time, Russian security software-maker Kaspersky has filed an anti-trust complaint against Microsoft with the European Commission claiming that the software giant is abusing its market dominance by pushing Windows 10 users towards its own anti-virus software.
