Britain’s native red squirrels are battling back against their grey foreign rivals and have returned to one of Britain’s best loved beauty spots. Except for a few pockets in the north of England, the Isle of Wight and Scotland, native reds have been almost wiped out, with a 95% decline since 1952. Their rapid decline has been blamed on the success of the imported grey, which spreads the squirrel pox virus.
