Seventy-Five percent of the world’s large carnivores – which include bears – are in decline, says a new report. Most of these animals now occupy less than half of their former ranges according to data published in the journal; Science. Researchers say the loss of these species could be extremely damaging to ecosystems the world over. Meanwhile, in the developed world, most carnivorous animals have already succumbed to extinction. “Globally, we are losing our large carnivores,” said lead author Prof William Ripple from Oregon State University. “Their ranges are collapsing. Many of these animals are at risk of extinction, either locally or globally.”

Would you believe that when Coca Cola was first launched in 1886, its two key ingredients were cocaine and caffeine. The cocaine was derived from the coca leaf and the caffeine from kola nut, leading to the name Coca-Cola. The original recipe called for five ounces of coca leaf per gallon of syrup, a significant dose; in 1891, Candler claimed his formula (altered extensively from Pemberton’s original) contained only a tenth of this amount. Coca-Cola once contained an estimated nine milligrams of cocaine per glass. In 1903, it was removed.

You will probably have heard the news yourselves by now but we just had to pass comment on today’s announcement that the giant puppets will return to Liverpool this year to mark 100 years since the outbreak of World War One. Memories of August 1914 will see Little Girl, Giant Uncle and canine companion Xolo return to the city’s streets in July. The last time they were here in 2012 was in Sea Odyssey, which was watched by an estimated 800,000 people. Helen Grant, Minister for Sport and Tourism, said; “Liverpool will without a doubt be home to one of the largest cultural commemorations.”

Hello everyone, my name is Erik, I am a teddy bear and this is my column. I think I confused everyone last time I wrote for Jammy Toast by talking about money before decimalisation and how complicated the old system was. This time I thought I would make it a little easier by just looking at the pound, or more precisely pound sterling. Some other countries also use the pound but this is not to be confused with our pound which is referred to as the pound sterling and is the oldest currency still in use today.
