As we get close to Christmas here at Jammy Toast, we usually select our favourite festive music videos for our Musical Sundays. The only problem with that is that Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s The Power Of Love and Gary Jules’ Mad World are our favourite Christmas songs and you all must know that by now. We can hardly dish those videos up yet again. So instead, we have actually found a more modern version of The Power Of Love with Holly Johnson singing it and doesn’t he look well.
I remember in 1991, when Holly was diagnosed with HIV, we didn’t really expect him to live much longer. He even said in his 1994 autobiography, A Bone In My Flute, that he didn’t expect to live much longer himself. That is the reason it is so great to see him looking so good.
Holly left Frankie Goes To Hollywood in 1987 after disagreements about the bands musical direction. He finally made his first solo album to much acclaim in 1989 but retired from the music industry a few years later citing his struggle with, and acceptance of, his homosexuality.
Since the mid-1990s, Johnson has worked primarily as a painter. His works have been exhibited at the Tate Liverpool and the Royal Academy. He has contributed to Modern Painters and the Paul Smith-sponsored Carlos magazine. He made a musical comeback in 1999, with a self-released album called Soulstream, preceded by the 1998 promo only single “Hallelujah!”
I think this is a version of The Power Of Love from Italian TV from 2017. Looking good, Holly…
Don’t forget, if you have any music videos you would like us to feature in the future, drop us a line. We are always happy to listen to requests from others, we cannot promise to feature any but we will try our best to find the videos if we think others will enjoy.
