Here at Jammy Toast we don’t often get involved with politics, or religious bigotry for that matter, but the time has come for us to speak out. Surely part of any religion must be to live and let live. No religion, or its followers, has the right to impose its will or beliefs on anyone else – and that includes Islamists. However, this is what has happened in Istanbul in Turkey. One of our favourite groups Radiohead, have also condemned an attack on people listening to their new album at a record store.

Twenty Islamists beat up customers and staff for drinking alcohol and listening to music during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Unconfirmed reports said one person was seriously injured in the incident yesterday. Just because some people follow Ramadan, what right do they have to impose the practice on others?

Local media reports said the male attackers used sticks and bottles against those present. The store in the central Beyoglu district was livestreaming Radiohead’s new album “A Moon Shaped Pool” when the group of twenty Islamists turned up at the store. They immediately attacked and beat up the store owner, manhandled customers and vandalized the store. According to one person who was hurt in the skirmish, he was not even an Islamist so why does he have to follow Ramadan?

This is just a case of people seeing others having fun and enjoying themselves and deciding to put an end to it.

In a statement the band described the assault on the Velvet IndieGround store as an act of “violent intolerance”. They went on to say; “Our hearts go out to those attacked at Velvet IndieGround in Istanbul. We hope that someday we will be able to look back on such acts of violent intolerance as things of the ancient past. For now, we can only offer our fans in Istanbul our love and support.”

These people have to be stopped!
