“Chandelier” is a song by Sia from her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear. Written by Sia and Jesse Shatkin and produced by Shatkin and Greg Kurstin, the song was released on 17th March 2014 as the lead single from the album. Lyrically, the song has a melancholic theme, detailing the demoralisation and rationalisation of alcoholism through the thought process of a “party girl”. More broadly, the song speaks to the fleeting feelings of release and abandon that come with intoxication, as well as the pain, guilt and emptiness that accompany addiction, alcoholism and hedonistic excesses.
The single received critical acclaim and reached the top ten on record charts in many countries including USA, UK, France, Italy, Poland, Norway, Australia and New Zealand. In the United States, the single became Sia’s first single as a lead artist to appear on the Hot 100, and sold over 2 million copies in the country. The song received four nominations at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, with its video receiving a nomination for Best Music Video.
A music video for the song, directed by Sia and Daniel Askill, and choreographed by Ryan Heffington, features dancer Maddie Ziegler. Sia had seen Ziegler on US Reality Show, Dance Moms, and asked her to appear in the video via Twitter. The video was directed by Sia and Daniel Askill, shot by cinematographer Sebastian Wintero and was choreographed by Ryan Heffington.
The video has been viewed on YouTube more than 2.2 billion times.
