The Bee Girl

Yesterday, I posted Blind Melon’s “No Rain” video for our Sunday music video. The video featured the story of the Bee Girl being laughed at during her school play but then ultimately meeting a group of Bee People who she can become friends with. The video became a huge hit on MTV back in the days when the channel played music videos. It was probably the video which helped the song reach #3 on the US Billboard chart. The album the song came from was the group’s debut album and featured drummer Glenn Graham’s sister, Georgia aged 10, dressed up as a Bee Girl for her school play. Band members spotted the old family photo from a “long-ago school play” while visiting Graham’s boyhood home.

For the music video the band decided to find a similar-looking girl to star, wearing a bee outfit, and the girl that was cast was Heather DeLoach. In the video she plays the glasses-wearing child who tap-dances in a bee outfit and later runs off to find her bee kin. She played the same character in the video for Weird Al Yankovic’s “Bedrock Anthem”.

Blind Melon vocalist Shannon Hoon described DeLoach in the months that followed as “signing autographs and hobnobbing with the heavy hitters. I heard she was hanging out with Madonna at the MTV Awards.”

It has been nearly 30 years since the video was released and DeLoach is all grown up these days. Now aged 37, she has her own Facebook page – Heather DeLoach, “The Bee Girl” – and still dresses up as a bee occasionally. Sometimes it’s for Halloween, and sometimes it’s for ABC TV.

“I’m not one to boast,” she told MTV a few years ago, “but my boyfriend, friends, sister and mother, whenever we’re in a conversation with a stranger, by the end they’ll bring it up and people will recognize me. People come up to me all the time with stories about how I changed their childhood and got them through a tough time of not being accepted.”

The song “Bee Girl” on the album Lost Dogs by Pearl Jam is a tribute to DeLoach.

DeLoach married financial advisor Matt Greiner in 2017 after the couple met online. The wedding included nods to the Blind Melon video with several bumblebee details. Today, DeLoach represents a fertility doctor in Orange County, California. She appeared as “Bee Girl” on the Fox musical game show “I Can See Your Voice” earlier this year.

She has also worked as an actress and has appeared in the medical drama, ER.

  1. Why don’t they use the Nightingale hospitals purely for COVID and keep regular hospitals for A&E and scheduled operations.

    No risk of cross-contamination.

  2. If you have Netflix and want something really good to watch, I recommend’The Queen’s Gambit’. One of the best things I’ve watched in years.

  3. If a 3 months full complete lockdown did fuck all, what exactly do they hope to achieve with a 3 week one while schools and unis are still open? It’s a brand new pandemic and we could argue that no one knew how to handle it. But I think we can all agree the best way is any way other than how this shower of shite have handled it.

Either do full strict lockdown like New Zealand and protect lives at all costs. Or do herd immunity and protect the economy at all costs. Not halfway between and destroy both.

  4. my prediction for the us presidential elections is [𝐑𝐄𝐃𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐘, 𝐌𝐈𝟔 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐌𝐎𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐃].

  5. I don’t think I can cope with all the banana bread tutorials and the boring Instagram lives that are going to come back in this next lockdown. I want to see people getting drunk, fat and being twats this time please. Now THAT I’ll watch.

  6. Why not try this easy personality test by answering just one simple question: have you been panic buying?

If you answered ‘yes’ – congratulations! You’re a twat.

  7. I will not hear any Christmas slander this year… my tree is going up ASAP and I’m watching a Christmas film every day (probably Bad Santa cos phwar).

    I need some Christmas endorphins!

  8. Happy Tuna Tuesday all!! Wishing you all a very good morning. Give your day meaning by setting a goal then work towards achieving that goal, it doesn’t have to be a big goal. Meownselfs goal is 3 breakfasts & seeing off interloping penguins!!

  9. Mark is another of my favourite humans. He came to see me and as soon as he sat down, I jumped onto his lap. He had to sit there for quite a long time because he is too kind to make me get off. We have some lovely humans at the allotments, haven’t we?

  10. “I wonder if you have such a thing as a balloon about you?” said Pooh.
Well, Christopher Robin had been to a party the day before and had a big red balloon and a big blue one.
“You’d better have the blue balloon,” he said; and so it was decided.

I enjoy my daily trips to campus & meeting my beloved student friends. My humans take me & stay socially distanced from others. If you meet me on campus & want to interact, put your hand out & let me sniff you first. Always wash your hands afterwards.

    1. why dont we test everyone and then put a wall round the city until everyone else gets the virus under control? the scouse republic could come into realisation by stealth.

  12. No time for additional breakfasts this morning. We had a freight train stuck on the line. I did offer for the Fat Controller to go and give it a push but ordered replacement coaches & sent. Trains now on the move – phew!!!!

  13. The grown ups say the arrows in the corridor are a “one-way” system but they seem to be leading me to the lovely teacher in the year 4 classroom again. The little people say it’s the road to treatsville, they do spoil me! Happy Tuesday friends.

  14. As we approach a second lockdown one of the things I’m most worried about is mental health. Please check in with loved ones. A phone call or a txt could make the difference… how’s my Razzbox? :black-heart:
